Bringing gold from Switzerland to India: limits and tips

Updated: 13 Oct 2026. Live rate every 30 seconds.

Many Indians living in Switzerland bring gold home for weddings and festivals. Here is what you need to know about Indian customs before you fly.

Duty-free allowance (Indian customs)

Under India's baggage rules, if you have lived abroad for more than one year you may bring gold jewellery duty-free up to 20 g (men) or 40 g (women), subject to value limits. Gold coins and bars do not get this jewellery allowance. Children are also covered under the same rule if they meet the stay condition.

Above the limit

If you carry more, declare it at the red channel. Customs duty is charged on the excess. Not declaring can lead to confiscation and penalties. Keep the purchase invoice from Switzerland with you.

Tips

Buying in Switzerland

Switzerland is a global gold refining hub; bars and coins are widely available, while 22K Indian jewellery is rare.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change; confirm with the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) or your airline before travelling.
